As a parent, one of the best things that you could give to your children is the gift of a healthy smile. When they get older, that smile will be more than just some perfectly aligned teeth, but something that fills them with confidence and makes it easier to live a happy, healthy life. Here at Embrace Our World Orthodontics, we make it easy for you to give your kids that healthy smile, with professional orthodontic care that will guide their development from the moment their adult teeth start to come in, all the way until they become young adults. Early orthodontic treatment is the first stage in creating that perfect smile, so to learn everything you need to know about this process, check out the information below.

What Is Early Orthodontic Treatment?

Commonly referred to as “Phase I” orthodontic care, early treatment is focused more on monitoring the development of your child’s smile, with preventative or interceptive treatment being provided only in cases where it’s necessary. The goal is to identify early signs of common developmental issues with the jaw and teeth, which could result in your child’s smile becoming crooked or lead to problems with eating or speaking comfortably.

An example of early orthodontic treatment would be if your child’s orthodontist may discover that the jaw is too narrow, limiting the amount of space that the teeth have to erupt, which increased the chance a misaligned smile. Using a special appliance called a palatal expander, the orthodontist can adjust the width of the jaw to be perfect, allowing more comfortable and natural tooth development.

What Are The Benefits Of Early Orthodontic Treatment?

The main advantage of early orthodontics is that we can provide treatment for issues before they become more severe or lead to other issues that would require more treatment later on. By fixing these issues and creating a more natural environment for your child’s smile to develop, it’s also common for future orthodontic treatment such as braces or Invisalign Teen to be more comfortable and have a shorter treatment time. Of course, the bigger picture is that early orthodontic care is simply the first step in creating your child’s perfect, healthy smile.

When Should My Kids Start With Orthodontic Care?

One of the reasons that early orthodontic treatment is so important for creating a perfect smile is because it harnesses the power of your child’s natural, rapid growth rate in their younger years. When the development of their smile really kicks it into high gear is when their first adult molars erupt at around age 7, which just happens to be the time when issues with their smile’s development will start to show as well. That is why the American Association of Orthodontics recommends that kids start with their orthodontic care at that age.

Are My Kids Eligible For Early Orthodontic Care?

Even if your kids are older than age 7, they may still be eligible for early orthodontic treatment to correct any issues with their bite or tooth development. The typical and unofficial cut off age for early care is around age 11 which is when Phase II treatment such as braces or Invisalign Teen begins, but even then, early treatment may be needed and provided if your child’s orthodontist recommends it. To know whether your kids are still candidates for early orthodontic care, schedule a visit to the orthodontist for an examination and consultation.
