The coronavirus pandemic has changed plans for nearly all of us. Regardless of what activities you’ll be participating in this summer, don’t forget to give your smile the same care and attention you usually would. We went ahead and listed out the best ways to care for your braces this Summer.

Don’t Change Your Routine

The best way to ensure attractive, healthy looking teeth and gums is to maintain your normal oral hygiene routine. It’s normal to feel the urge to lay back and enjoy the carefree days of summer, don’t let it happen. Continue your usual brushing and flossing, as well as your routine braces maintenance as usual, including any equipment you use, such as a water pik or floss threader. Don’t forget to brush and floss after your meal to keep your teeth clean and free of food particles that can cause decay. Pack a braces care kit with all the essentials if you’ll be away from home.

Drink A Lot Of Water

Hydration is key at all times, but it can be even more important during the long, hot days of summer—especially if you’ll be spending lots of time outside in the heat. You might be wondering how is hydration important for braces? Water helps flush your teeth and gums of leftover food particles. Additionally, the rinsing helps wash away bacteria between brushing. Drink lots of water every day, and if you’re on the more active side, be sure you’re replacing lost electrolytes with enhanced water or sports drinks.

Monitor What You Eat

Summer can be filled with tasty foods you don’t usually eat at other times of year, which includes foods like BBQ, corn on the cob, and all sorts of sweet ice cream or candy. Remember to stick to the guidelines provided by your St Louis orthodontist to avoid damaging your braces and needing to come in for an emergency repair. Don’t eat hard, sticky foods. Avoid biting into anything with your front teeth, ripping, or tearing (think tough grilled meats like ribs or steaks). While you can definitely enjoy sweet treats, it’s wise to limit your sugar intake to keep your risk of tooth decay and cavities at a minimum.

Don’t Forget About Your Lips

Most people don’t think of lips a part of your orthodontic treatment, but they need attention, too. Apply lip balm at all times to protect your lips from the sun and prevent them from getting cracked and dry. Not only are chapped lips annoying, they can even be painful and unsightly. Attempt use a lip balm with sunscreen, and if you find yourself without lip balm and require a solution in a pinch, coconut oil or petroleum jelly are great options.
