Do Braces Hurt?

Despite new alternatives like Invisalign, traditional braces are still the most popular orthodontic treatment on the market. At Embrace Our World Orthodontics, we're proud to be a leading orthodontist serving the St. Louis, MO area, and we offer several different types of braces to help our patients achieve beautiful new smiles. But in addition to the treatment itself, we strive to be a comprehensive resource for all aspects of orthodontics, so we'd like to take some time to answer one of the most common questions we hear from our patients: do braces hurt?

Are Braces Painful?

It's a common conception that braces cause pain, but luckily for all those in need of a new smile, this isn't really the case. Braces can cause some discomfort, sure, but they're not really painful. Most patients experience some soreness or discomfort for a few days after first getting braces, and that may recur after having your braces adjusted. But this discomfort is usually mild and fades within a day or two to a week, and most patients can manage it using warm salt water rinses and over the counter pain relievers.

Aside from the soreness, it's common for the metal brackets of your braces to create little cuts or scrapes in your mouth from time to time. Usually, these are more or less painless, but they can be irritating. You can soothe them with a warm salt water rinse, and you can always use dental wax to cover your braces and prevent irritation.
