The Orthodontic Process

The Orthodontic Process

Every patient will have a slightly different treatment experience. After all, each patient has individual needs and unique teeth. That being said, the majority of patients will following this basic orthodontic process:

First Visit: At Embrace Our World Orthodontics, we recommend bringing your child to the orthodontist for their first visit by age 7. This way we can see how their teeth are aligned, if early treatment is necessary, and monitor their growth until they will undergo kids braces.

During Treatment with St. Louis Braces: Once you have your kid or teen braces on, you can expect to see the orthodontist every four to eight weeks. At these appointments, our orthodontist will want to tighten your braces, change any broken brackets or wires, make slight adjustments if necessary, and monitor your progress in braces. These checkups are normally 20-30 minutes. This process is about the same for patients who are using Invisalign clear aligners.

Retention: Almost every patient will have a retention phase. After completing your orthodontic treatment and working so hard to get your teeth straight, we want to keep them that way. A retainer is used to ensure your teeth do not move back to their original, crooked positions. The retention phase normally lasts about six months where you will need to wear your retainers every day and night. After six months, you can change to only wearing them at night. Throughout this retention phase, you can expect to see the orthodontist for a few checkups.
