At Embrace Our World Orthodontics, we believe everyone deserves a healthy, beautiful smile, and our mission is to help each of our patients achieve one through comprehensive orthodontic treatment. But sometimes, the best way to create an ideal smile is to start early – and that can mean starting in childhood. So how can you support your child's healthy orthodontic development? Here are a few tips.

What Should I Do for My Child's Orthodontic Care?

Most people, at some point in their lives, will develop orthodontic problems. While some orthodontic conditions are caused by certain childhood habits like prolonged thumb sucking, most are simply the result of genetics. Accordingly, all kids should have their first orthodontic evaluation around the time they turn 7 years old. We evaluate at age 7 because at this age, the back bite has fully grown in, which allows our St. Louis orthodontist to evaluate all tooth relationships and detect any current problems as well as issues that may develop down the line.

For most patients, we'll simply choose to monitor your child's development after their consultation and wait for the ideal time to begin treatment, usually during adolescence. However, for some patients, we may need to start with early orthodontic treatment. We use early orthodontics to treat certain orthodontic conditions that are difficult to treat later on, particularly those that affect jaw alignment. In these cases, we'll usually start with an initial phase of treatment between ages 7-9, followed by a rest period, then finish treatment during adolescence. Even though there are two separate treatment phases, early treatment means your child will spend less time with braces overall, and it usually lets us solve the problem with less intensive treatment methods.
