Summer is here, and it’s already brought all the heat and humidity that comes with it. Even though everyone may be actively trying not to melt, summer is still the perfect time to get in some much-needed relaxation time and enjoy some classic, delicious summer snacks. However, when you have your braces, those summer backyard barbecues or refreshing, ice-cold ice cream bars or popsicles may come with some danger this time around, because biting into the wrong type of food can break your braces and leave them in a state where they’re not working as they should. Avoiding hard and sticky foods could mean having to miss out on some great summer food, but don’t worry, because Embrace Our World Orthodontics is here to help! To make sure that you still get to chow down on some great food, below we’ve put some recipes so you can make some of our favorite, delectable summer treats. They’re all easy to make at home, and they’re so good you’ll be making them all summer long! Check them out below.

Avocado Fries

GettyImages-861268186Avocado is amazing on everything, from laying some slices down on a burger or some toast to mashing it up and making it into a refreshing guacamole. However, avocado doesn’t always have to be just a topping or an ingredient, since it can make a great snack all on its own. Once you try these avocado fries, you’ll be asking yourself how every restaurant in town isn’t serving these. Not only are they delicious, but they are a great alternative to eating some fatty, greasy, and not-really-healthy-for-you french fries. Here’s how to make them:

Ingredients

  • Canola oil for frying
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 tsp kosher salt
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 1/4 cups panko bread crumbs
  • 2 firm-ripe medium avocados, pitted, peeled, and sliced into ½ inch wedges
  • Optional: grated parmesan cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 200°.
  2. In a medium saucepan, heat 1 1/2 inches of oil until it reaches 375° on a deep-fry thermometer.
  3. Mix together flour and ½ tsp of salt and put on a shallow plate. On separate plates, put the eggs and the panko crumbs
  4. Sprinkly ½ tsp of salt onto the avocado slices
  5. In order, dip the avocado slices in flour until coated, then egg, and then the panko crumbs. Set aside each avocado slice as you coat them.
  6. Take one quarter of the avocado slices and fry them in the canola oil until golden, which should take about 30 to 60 seconds. Transfer to plate and keep warm in the oven while you fry the other avocado slices.
  7. Sprinkle with salt and grated parmesan as desired.
  8. Serve and enjoy!

Dragon Fruit Smoothie Bowls

GettyImages-874874696If you’ve never heard of dragon fruit, you’re in for a surprise. If you have, then you already know that this is going to taste amazing. Dragon fruit is not just refreshing, as it’s also packed full of nutrients, making this a healthy snack that you can enjoy throughout your summer anytime you feel like it. While dragon fruit used to be difficult to come by, it’s had a surge in popularity in smoothie and juice shops, and now you can often find dragon fruit at your local supermarket. With this smoothie bowl, we’ll be adding in some more fruit to transform it into a perfect blend of summer flavors, and then throwing whatever toppings we want into the bowl to make it our own. As far as toppings go, the ones we mention are just suggestions, so you can add whatever you want!

Ingredients

  • 1 banana chopped and frozen
  • 1 cup mango chopped and frozen
  • 1 cup dragon fruit (pitaya) chopped and frozen
  • 1/4 cup coconut milk canned, full fat

Toppings (optional)

  • coconut
  • fresh fruit
  • nuts or nut butters (peanut butter, nutella, etc.)
  • granola
  • chocolate chips

Instructions

  1. Put all of the frozen fruit into a blender or food processor. Let the fruit sit at room temperature to allow it to slightly dethaw before blending, about 5 minutes.
  2. Pour in coconut milk, then blend or process until the mixture is smooth.
  3. Pour mixture out into a bowl, add desired toppings, and serve!

Matcha Coconut Ice Cream

GettyImages-687565668If you’ve never heard of matcha, it’s simply a finely ground powder of special green tea leaves, and it is most often used to make delicious hot or iced tea. However, matcha can also be used to flavor a wide range of things, like this delicious ice cream that makes a perfect summer treat that can help you beat the heat. While making your own homemade ice cream often requires an ice cream maker, this one doesn’t, instead needing only an electric blender to mix everything together. Once you’ve made your own ice cream once, you’ll be hooked, and you can start experimenting with all types of flavors, but this matcha one will still be a delectable masterpiece.

Ingredients

  • 2 cans (15 oz.) full fat unsweetened coconut milk, refrigerated overnight (Save ¼ cup of reserve liquid that is separated from cream)
  • 3 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1 tablespoon matcha powder
  • 2 teaspoons Vanilla Extract
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chunks

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, pour the cream from the coconut milk, ¼ cup reserved liquid, maple syrup, matcha powder and vanilla.
  2. Using an electric mixer, mix all ingredient until fully combined.
  3. Add dark chocolate chunks and gently fold into the mixture.
  4. Pour mixture into a gallon zipper storage bag.
  5. Cut one corner of the storage bag to create an opening big enough for the chocolate chunks to fit through.
  6. Pipe the mixture into individual cups (custard cups work perfectly)
  7. Place cups in freezer for 6-8 hours or until mixture is fully frozen.
  8. Dig in to your own homemade ice cream!
