Surviving the Holidays With Braces

Surviving the Holidays With Braces
Posted on 12/20/2019

St. Louis is a wonderful place to be an orthodontist or in anypasted image 0 business for the holidays with the Festival of Lights and Thanksgiving Parade kicking off a host of joy-filled events! At Embrace Our World Orthodontics, we embrace the joy but also want to keep our braces and Invisalign patients thinking about their best oral hygiene. With the holidays also comes a plethora of sweet treats and holiday feasts our St. Louis braces patients must survive. You’ll be exposed to a variety of delicious-looking food choices and not all of them are going to be best for your braces. Take our advice here and keep your braces from damage while you’re enjoying the holidays!

Increase Brushing Frequency

Combat the effects of sugary treats with more frequent brushing and flossing. From the leftover Halloween candy, you’re probably still enjoying the candy in your stocking and all the treats in between, your teeth are likely getting an overload of sugar. This sugar works with the natural bacteria in your mouth to form a sticky substance called plaque which can attach itself to your teeth and erode away your enamel coating, eventually causing cavities. Packing a toothbrush when you go out for the day makes it easy to brush after meals and snacks. And flossing can eliminate that plaque more effectively in and around your braces. Your teeth will thank you!

Don’t Skip Your St. Louis Orthodontist Appointments!

With the holiday rush and many of you traveling to see family and friends, it’s tempting to cancel seeing your orthodontist in our St. Louis office. Big mistake. Every appointment you cancel puts your orthodontic treatment farther behind. Plus, our skilled doctors will want to see that your teeth are remaining healthy and moving in the right direction toward your new, beautiful smile. So, keep your appointments and keep on track!

Eat Healthy Foods & Snacks That Won’t Harm Your Braces

While Invisalign patients have the luxury of removing their aligners when eating, our St. Louis area patients with metal or ceramic braces will need to think about what they are eating during the holidays to best protect their orthodontic appliances. Holiday treats can be tempting but generally, stay away from hard or sticky foods. Whether you’re a teen or adult orthodontic patient, our orthodontists and staff at Embrace Our World Orthodontics are here to make sure the creation of your beautiful smile stays on track. Here are lists of holiday food no-nos and those you can still enjoy for our braces-wearing friends:

This travel/emergency orthodontic kit should contain a travel toothbrush and toothpaste, floss and mouthwash. You should also add orthodontic wax to protect your cheeks in case you do have a bracket or wire that breaks or bends.
