While you’re getting prepared to leave for your vacation, it’s important to remember that if you have braces, taking great care of your teeth and protecting your braces is still a top priority. While you’re out exploring, you’re also likely being pulled out of your normal routine, which can throw a wrench in your oral hygiene routine too. At Embrace Our World Orthodontics, we want to make sure that your summer vacation doesn’t get you off track on your journey toward the perfect smile, so below is a guide for caring for your smile and braces while you’re on vacation.

Bring A To-Go Oral Hygiene Kit With You

Wherever you go, make sure you pack up a toothbrush and enough toothpaste and floss to last you throughout your trip. In addition to your typical oral hygiene essentials, it’s also a good idea to bring things like orthodontic wax just in case you have a stray archwire poking you in the mouth, preventing serious irritation or pain until you can get back to your orthodontist to get it fixed. Floss threaders are another helpful tool to make flossing with your braces easier. Finally, extra elastics and rubber bands are great to have just in case you end up snapping one during some fun summer activities. Just to make sure you’ve packed everything before you leave for your trip, here’s all of those things we mentioned in a checklist:

  • Toothbrush & toothpaste
  • Floss & floss threaders
  • Extra elastics and rubber bands
  • Orthodontic wax

Be Careful With What You Eat

One of the best things about traveling is experiencing new, delicious food. However, eating the wrong thing can be dangerous for your braces, no matter how good it tastes. Make sure you steer clear of hard or crunchy foods, since they can easily snap a bracket right off of your tooth, or even bend the archwire. The same thing goes for sticky foods, as just the act of trying to chew them can end up pulling brackets off. If you have any questions about what you can or can’t eat, just contact us and we can help guide you on keeping your travel meals braces-friendly.

Never Forget To Brush & Floss

While it can be exciting to take a break from your normal routine at home, your oral hygiene care is part of that routine that needs to travel with you. Even when your days and nights are filled with exciting activities, always remember to brush and floss at least twice a day, like when you wake up and right before you go to sleep. By maintaining a great oral hygiene regimen on your travels, you prevent tooth decay or gum disease from ever getting even the slightest chance to develop, ensuring that your smile is flawless when you finally get those braces off.
