Embrace Our World Orthodontics strives to provide every patient throughout St. Louis, MO with straight, beautiful smiles that they are proud of. To do so, our children’s orthodontists offer treatments like braces, Invisalign, and early orthodontic care to correct crowded and misaligned teeth. Dental crowding is very common in children, teens, and adults. The most effective way to correct dental crowding is to undergo orthodontic treatment, usually in the form of braces.

What is Dental Crowding?

Dental crowding occurs when there is not enough space in the mouth to accommodate permanent teeth. Instead, these teeth end up growing crooked and not straight. These patients then have misaligned teeth that overlap with each other. There are varying degrees of dental crowding including mild crowding, moderate crowding, and severe crowding.

The Causes of Dental Crowding

Dental crowding can be caused by a number of different factors. Our Saint Louis, MO children’s orthodontist states that these are the most common reasons for dental crowding:

  • Genetics: When the teeth are larger than the jaw, the teeth do not grow in correctly and instead overlap with one another. This is based on family genes.
  • Early Loss of Primary Teeth: If primary teeth are lost too early, other teeth may move into their empty space prior to the permanent tooth growing into place.
  • Late Loss of Primary Teeth: Sometimes, baby teeth are over retained, meaning they do not fall out on their own or they are not pulled out when they are sufficiently loose. This prevents the eruption of the new permanent tooth and will cause it to grow misaligned.
