Maintaining Your New Smile

Having your braces removed is an exciting time. Nothing compares to the feeling of confidence that comes from having a perfect smile. However, once you complete your St. Louis Invisalign treatment, or have your St. Louis metal or ceramic braces removed, there is still one more phase of treatment necessary. Retention keeps your new smile perfect and prevents your teeth from shifting back into their former positions. Retainers are a lifetime commitment that keep your smile looking straight and beautiful.

Caring For Your Retainer

As your orthodontist in St. Louis, we use a variety of retainers specific to our patients' needs. We advise each patient to be very careful when handling your retainer, as they are fragile and costly to replace. Your St. Louis orthodontist will provide you with a special case for your retainer; please make sure to keep it in this case when it is not being worn. Keep your retainer clean by brushing it with toothpaste (sometimes with denture cleaner) using warm water.

Your retainer should be worn at all times with the exception of eating and brushing your teeth. It should also be removed when participating in sports that require a mouthguard, or while swimming. After several months of full-time wear, your orthodontist in St. Louis may revise your retention treatment, allowing the retainer to strictly be worn at night.

Remember, the final results of St. Louis metal and ceramic braces depend on your retainer, so follow through with the hard work you've put in so far.
